It’s anywhere and everywhere.
Never before has it been so easy to run away. To run away from the feeling. To submerge ourselves in something that frees us from having to deal with it.
I constantly catch myself picking up my phone and surfing the news whenever I start to feel challenged. It’s a flight response to seek distraction. To seek a safe haven in something that doesn’t feel as scary or hard.
And the problem is it’s at our fingertips. It’s to easy to escape to. It’s not like you have to get in your car to go experience distraction. You don’t even have to get up. It’s always there. The only way we get separation is if we create it.
But at some point, we have to stop running. We have to stop running away from true meaning and vulnerability. From running away from our inner demons. And from running away from work that takes us out of our comfort zone and challenges us.
Distraction is only a temporary antidote – the stress doesn’t go away. It just waits and hides lurking in the background. Waiting to rear it’s head out in the moments of quiet.
So we must learn to create some separation and fight distraction. Notice when we are running away and hiding.
It’s only then that we can feel at peace and get back to doing work that truly matters.
