The difference between efficiency and productivity

We tend to focus on how quickly we get something done.  There is evidence of efficiency improvements all around.

We can communicate quicker.  Our phones are responsive and blazing fast.  We can store everything in the cloud.  We can increasingly do everything faster and more efficiently.

Why then, does it seem like there is still a race against the clock.  As if there is never enough time in the day?

Because we aren’t focused.  We aren’t as disciplined.  Yes we can do it all faster.

But the only way we can take advantage of this extra efficiency is to make sure we are working on the right things in the first place.

And that’s the essence of productivity.  It’s seeking out the right tasks and the right goals to chase after.  And prioritizing what’s truly important.

It’s only then that we can actually start to take advantage of the extra efficiency.
